DiMarzio PAF?

The question mark is because I can never tell what’s what with DiMarzio pickups throughout the years. I do know that for decades, one of the Go To PAF replacements/upgrades was always the DiMarzio PAF but these, to the best of my knowledge are NOT from the ’70’s but came a little later, I think? These were taken off the Tennesean Project.

NEWS UPDATE FROM DIMARZIO TECH DEPT 12:00PM 11/16/11

These are BOTH PAF’s of different ages, Pickup #1 was made in the 1970’s for over the counter consumer purchase and Pickup #2 was made in the early 1980’s for OEM meaning, it was intended to go on a manufacturer’s guitar, more than likely intended for the Bridge position. Thanks to the Tech Dept at DiMarzio! Great Products, GREAT service!!!

There are actually 2 SUBTLY different pickups. Now, as I remember PAF’s they had 3 “holes” in each bobbin, 2 round, 1 square. These both have 3 round “holes”. BOTH have a brass mounting plate with the very typical tarnish from the thumbs of the installer.

Pickup #1 has the following attributes:

  1. Individual magnets, aren’t magnets at all but are steel rods, are rounded (seem to be chrome plated) and have less “pull” (VERY unscientific testing)
  2. Square tabs on the plate for the mounting screw and spring
  3. E1-E6 spacing is 1 15/16″
  4. DC Resistance is 8.0 Kohms (With my Radio Cheezo Meter)

Pickup #2 has the following attributes:

  1. Individual magnets are FLAT (no plating) and have more “pull” (VERY unscientific testing)
  2. Rounded tabs on the plate for the mounting screw and spring
  3. E1-E6 spacing is 1 7/8″
  4. DC Resistance is 7.2 Kohms (With my Radio Cheezo Meter)
  5. According to my DiMarzio source, probably a higher output than Pickup #1
